The Best Workout Supplements for Pregnancy & Postpartum
Supplementation is so important if you are working out. But most ladies tend to skip supplements during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because they have no idea what is safe. I am so excited to show you what is!
Multivitamin
First and foremost, a good prenatal multivitamin is a MUST have. It will supply your baby the nutrition it needs in its most critical and early growth periods where all of the vital organs are formed. It will also help cover any basese for you as far as nutrients goes, but should never be substitued for a healthy diet packed with vitamins and minerals. Any brand is typically fine as long as it has all of the vitamins and minerals in a regular multi and as long as it has 800mcg of folic acid which is SUPER important to the closing of your growing baby’s neural tube and spine. Not having enough folic acid in your diet can cause birth defects.
Protein Powder
Secondly, a protein powder that is safe for you and baby is key. Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding your baby after pregnancy, choosing the right protein powder is very important! I suggest a natural whey or vegan protein to start with. My favorite brand lately that offers safe, clean supplements has been BEAM which stands for Be Amazing.
Whey Protein
Whey protein is derived from milk. The protein portion of whole milk consists of 20% whey protein and 80% casein protein. Whey is by far the most popular type of protein used in protein powders. For most people, it’s the best all-around choice in terms of taste (it’s one of the best-tasting), quality (it’s the highest) and cost (it’s the most economical). Another unique benefit of whey protein, and one that is often overlooked, is that it enhances the immune system in several ways.
Whey is generally a good option if you have no dietary restrictions or allergies. BEAM offers two yummy flavors in their whey protein: salty peanut butter and chocolate fudge. The whey powders contain 120 calories and 25 grams of protein per serving, digestive enzymes, and is also gluten and soy free.
Vegan Protein
Vegan protein is a great option for those who cannot have whey or who simply just don’t prefer it. Vegan protein can be made with hemp, pea, brown rice, and even soy. This a great option is for mamas who are breastfeeding since some babies tend to have a sensitivity to dairy. When my daughter was born, I noticed she would get super fussy afte I consumed dairy before a feeding. Therefore, I switched from whey protein to vegan protein and all was well!
Some plant based protein powders taste chalky and gross, but BEAM’s flavors are amazing. I personally love the Blueberry Muffin the best, but they also offer Chocolate Brownie and their newest flavor Peanut Butter Smoothie. Their vegan powders are gluten and soy free, 100 calories and 20 grams of protein per serving, and contains prebiotic fiber!
Collagen
Taking collagen supplements can be helpful during pregnancy and postpartum. Pregnant women can experience brittle hair and even hair loss, so collagen supplements can help restore hair back to health. The postpartum benefits of taking them can also help with skin elasticity, helping to tighten the skin on the stomach. Collagen is also so good for your joints
BEAM offers collagen peptides that are unflavored which can be added to your protein shake or any juice. It is also gluten and soy free.
Greens
A greens powder is helpful in general, but extra good for the pregnant or postpartum mama. 9 out of 10 adults don’t get enough fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. When I was pregnant, I would make a green smoothie using a greens powder as a snack during the morning and it would immediatlely boost my energy and mood! It was also nice knowing that I was supplying my body (and baby) with everything it needed.
BEAM offers Super Greens in two flavors: berry and chocolate. I personally love the chocolate because it hides any “greens” flavor. Packed with 26 fruits and vegetables, their flavors are all natural! Also their greens supplement contains prebiotic fiber and antioxidants as well.
As you can see, supplements can be safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding-you just have to choose the right ones. Always read the labels and do your research. With BEAM, you cannot go wrong whether you are pregnant, nursing your baby, or even later on in life!
